Writing Assignment Information
A portion of your 2nd, 3rd and 4th 9 Weeks Symphony Band Grade is a writing assignment.
All writing assignments should be typed, double spaced, 1” margins, 14 point times font (or similar), no less than 3 pages (long enough to cover the subject… short enough to keep me interested).
Options for writings assignments are as follows:
- A history of your instrument. Topics should include predecessors, inventors, developers, evolution of the instruments, various uses over the years, and anything else relevant to the development of the instrument.
- Great performer on your instrument. Choose a famous performer on your instrument and find out about his/her career, influences, training etc. Submitted sound recordings are required. Suggested list. If you did not use the list to select your performer please check with me BEFORE you start writing.
- Composer/Conductor/Bandmaster. Research the life and times of a personality important to the band world. Select from a list of composers, conductors, and bandmasters. Write your report based on this person and their contributions to the band world. Suggested List.
- Repertoire. Research ones of our pieces. This may include material, story, background of the composer, commissioner or other. Suggested List.
- Famous Ensembles. Choose a famous wind ensemble and research/discuss their importance to the history of the American Band. Suggested List
- Your option. Create your own subject for a report. The subject MUST be approved BEFORE you start writing.
The grade for each report will be determined by how completely you discuss the subject, grammar, spelling, and turning the assignment in on time.
Each writing assignment is worth 50 points.
